Medication for opioid or alcohol use, often called MAT, combines counseling with a prescribed medication such as buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone. Methadone is dispensed only by licensed narcotic treatment programs, which California licenses separately. Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be prescribed by many clinics and some outpatient programs.

What to ask
Ask which medications the program offers, whether it prescribes on site or refers out, and how dosing and refills work week to week.
